SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE THROUGH IOTINTEGRATED HYDROPONIC VERTICAL FARMING
Abstract
The ever-growing population projected to exceed 9 billion by the year 2050,
and urbanization removing over 30 per cent of available arable land-space, it has become imperative that new agricultural innovations be made sustainable. The present study statistically proves the feasibility of an IoT-based hydroponic vertical farm for optimum crop productivity in space-constrained environments. Experimentation has shown an improvement of 52% in yield, 41% in water use reduction, 37.5% savings in nutrients, and 80% less labor compared to traditional hydroponic systems. Despite being remote, realtime monitoring has been able to achieve more than 95% accuracy and reduce system downtime of up to 75%. All these performance results were achieved with a controlled monitored setup using sensors and actuators integrated with cloud platform monitoring, within a 60-day cultivation cycle. IoT-based hydroponic farming is a demonstrated proposition for significant improvement in productivity, resource efficiency, and
sustainability-an urban way forward to food security.
